Economics in Three Lessons and One Hundred Econ...

Economics in Three Lessons:Henry Hazlitt's 1946 book Economics in One Lesson sold more than a million copies. It is perhaps the best selling economics book of all time. In this volume, Hunter Lewis, a Hazlitt admirer and student, provides a sequel and update. The central lesson of Hazlitt's seminal work is that economic thought and policy must consider all the consequences of an action, not just the immediate or most visible ones. Hazlitt is right that this is the kernel of all good economics. Lewis covers this theme and also introduces two more lessons: how a free and uncontrolled price system creates prosperity and how a controlled or manipulated price system creates only crony capitalist corruption and, ultimately, poverty and economic failure. The great merit of this volume is its simplicity. Anyone can listen to it and understand it. It is an ideal introduction to economics. One Hundred Economic Laws:In this groundbreaking volume, Lewis does what no one has attempted to do, at least not for many decades: It collects in one place some of the most important laws of economics. Everyone understands the importance of understanding the laws of physics and other natural sciences. Are there also laws of economics? Can understanding them also make our lives better? This volume answers with a resounding "Yes" to both questions. We need the laws of economics to help guide our choices and actions in a very uncertain world. We also need them to protect us from the “thinkers for hire” who, paid by special economic interests, try to persuade us to ignore reality. This short audiobook is also a complete course in economics. Unlike the dry-as-dust and often irrelevant textbooks forced on high school and college students, it is authored in a lively and even sparkling style. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Bruce Lorie. Lesson Study Research and Practice in Mathemati...

Lesson study is a professional development process that teachers engage in to systematically examine their practice, with the goal of becoming more effective. Originating in Japan, lesson study has gained significant momentum in the mathematics education community in recent years. As a process for professional development, lesson study became highly visible when it was proposed as a means of supporting the common practice of promoting better teaching by disseminating documents like standards, benchmarks and nationally validated curricula. While the body of knowledge about lesson study is growing, it remains somewhat elusive and composed of discrete research endeavors. As a new research area there is no coherent knowledge base yet. This book will contribute to the field bringing the work of researchers and practitioners together to create a resource for extant work. This book describes several aspects of Lesson Study, amongst others: it gives an historical overview of the concept, it addresses issues related to learning and teaching mathematics, it looks at the role of the teacher in the process. The last two sections of the book look at how lesson Study can be used with preservice mathematics teachers and at university mathematics methods teaching.

Intercultural Learning within Content and Langu...

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, Dresden Technical University (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Content and Language Integrated Learning, 6 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Intercultural learning is an essential part in learning as well as in teaching. Furthermore it does not depend on a specific subject, because intercultural aspects are involved in many diverse issues in our daily life. Teaching intercultural is also one of the most important aspects of modern education. In my further comments I am going to tell what we have to understand by 'Intercultural Learning' and what we have to keep in mind, when we deal with this specific issue of society as well as of modern foreign language teaching. Therefore, I would like to say something about the iceberg model as a concept of culture, the goals and levels of intercultural learning, as well as presenting a teaching sequence of an ethics lesson. Obviously, culture can bee seen as an iceberg: Only a small part above the waterline is visible. The tip of the iceberg, the larger part underneath the waterline, is invisible. This part is considered to be the foundation. The same happens with culture. On the one hand, there are some visible parts like architecture, music, language or cooking. On the other hand, invisible parts like social norms or values. Concerning the concept of culture, the visible parts are just expressions of its invisible parts. It also highlights the difficulty of understanding people from different social backgrounds. Although, we are able to see the visible parts of their 'iceberg' we cannot immediately realise what the foundations are. To set an example, when you see a black person on the street you obviously see that the person is black because this becomes visible for you. What you cannot see on the first look is the social background, the religion the person belongs to, the country where he or she comes from, the history the person has, if the ancestors had suffered from slavery or not. Unfortunately, all those things are invisible for you. With the help of intercultural learning one can acquire knowledge, attitudes or behaviour that is connected with the interaction of different cultures. It can also denote a concept of how people with different cultural backgrounds can live together peacefully. The success of intercultural learning depends on three major goals which are to be dealt with now. Even though, they seem to be autonomous in their aims, they share one main principle, the intercultural competence.

'Where Do I Go From Here?' by Karen Vocke is a practical and well written book that will appeal to teachers, administrators, and other community members where migrant workers live and these workers' children go to school. The book contains valuable resources, including lesson plans and other materials that could be used by teachers of other ESL children, as well as by teachers whose students are not learners of English. The book helps the reader become aware that educational opportunity and equality do not exist as static entities, but rather are created by whole communities, especially those who choose to make the invisible more visible. - Prolepsis' 'In our current society, teachers are faced with students who move frequently from place to place, speak a language other than English, and represent diverse cultures.'' This book shares many strategies and ideas that will help a teacher, experienced or novice, to meet the needs of these 'new' students found in U.S. classrooms.' ' - Cheryl BoothbyState and Federal Programs Directorand Special Education DirectorHartford, Michigan, Public Schools Migrant farm laborers are often called America's 'invisible people' - a term that, tragically, is just as applicable to their children. Because their lives are transitory and their English skills often limited, our opportunities to have a lasting impact on their literacy education are far too brief. But that makes these children no less deserving of our full commitment. In ''Where Do I Go from Here?'' Karen Vocke describes how to make the most of each day, creating an educational experience that will serve 'all' children long after they leave our classrooms. Always mindful of state standards and assessment requirements, Vocke demonstrates how to modify the curriculum and adapt strategies to facilitate English language acquisition and content-area knowledge. She provides vital information on: the history, culture, and families of migrant students so that we better understand - and respect - the foundation on which their lives are built essential language considerations, with an emphasis on what we can do now to help struggling English learners become more proficient culturally responsive materials and lessons, with guidelines on how to evaluate books, along with a complete lesson plan for promoting cultural sensitivity the need for an inclusive community of readers and writers, based on the principles of cooperative learning and supported by a lesson plan on student heritage and tradition as well as other activities that create a culture of sharing ways to foster both literacy and cultural understanding through technology, especially the many benefits of digital storytelling, with easy-to-follow guidelines the importance of involving migrant families and communities, with suggestions on overcoming language and cultural barriers as well as specific steps you and your school can take. All this is supported by a wealth of helpful materials, including additional resources for working with migrant families, organizations you can contact for more information, recommended children's literature and wordless picture books, and letters and announcements to parents in both E
