Lessons from Leaders: Integrity and Moral Development:Swimming Upstream Anne Rakip
FRENCH EDITION. When the plans and dreams of a young swimmer are shattered by the United States´ boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, God opens the door of new opportunities. For Paul Asmuth, then 22, it is the end of an unfulfilled dream, and the beginning of another journey, this one remarkable and life-changing. Plunging into the astounding, grueling, hypnotic, and often oddly beautiful world of international marathon swimming competitions, Asmuth experiences both triumph and tragedy, and, in a process as long and punishing as the marathon swims themselves, slowly discovers the best of himself. If you care for resumes, Asmuth is one of the most successful marathon swimmers in history. In the sapphire seas off Italy, in the frigid lakes of Quebec, Canada, in the marshy back bays of New Jersey, in the questionable waters ringing Manhattan, swimming distances from twenty to forty miles, Asmuth emerged victorious, often to thunderous acclaim. After multiple victories at the twenty-six-mile swim across Quebec´s Lac Memphremagog, up to 20,000 spectators would cheer and call him ´´le roi´´ (the king) of their lake. But true victory is not a matter of accolades or medals, and the stories that make a real difference unfold behind the headlines. Overcoming self-doubt, nausea, hypothermia, cruel tides and dark, watery shadows both real and imagined, Asmuth calls upon passion, iron-clad resolve, and steadfast faith to emerge a changed man, attaining success in its truest and most honest form. This success does not end when Asmuth retires from competing. Coming full circle, when he hangs up his swim suit, Paul takes the knowledge, lessons and examples he learned from his own experiences and some of the world´s greatest coaches, and turns to helping others with their swimming dreams. His prayers to give back are answered by coaching opportunities at multiple World Championships and two Olympic Games, where marathon swimming is now a contested event. But this is not just the tale of a swimmer. Like any great story, Paul´s transcends sport. By listening to the voice of faith and not of fear, new dreams are born, and God´s plans are revealed.
You’re about to discover proven steps and strategies on how to get over your aquaphobia and finally do things that you are not able to accomplish because of your fear of water. Many people revere and fear water because of the way it can be majestic and yet dangerous. When it is at an extreme, aquaphobia may interfere with one’s otherwise normal life. People with aquaphobia do realize that the fear they have for water is not entirely rational; however, that fear is something that they cannot control. The intensity of fear instilled by aquaphobia ranges from mild to crippling depending on a person’s experience as well as the frequency and degree of exposure to the stimulus. The effects can be as minor as the lack of confidence around water or as extreme as having very intense negative feelings because of it every single time (chronic water phobia). The good thing is, aquaphobia can be treated just like the other social phobias. Once the possible causes of a person’s aquaphobia are determined, treatment strategies shall be recommended to help the person overcome aquaphobia permanently. Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable, audiobook edition of The Penguin Lessons by Tom Michell, read by Bill Nighy. ´I was hoping against hope that the penguin would survive because as of that instant he had a name, and with his name came the beginning of a bond which would last a life-time.´ Tom Michell is in his roaring 20´s: single, free-spirited and seeking adventure. He has a plane ticket to South America, a teaching position in a prestigious Argentine boarding school, and endless summer holidays. He even has a motorbike, Che Guevara style. What he doesn´t need is a pet. What he really doesn´t need is a pet penguin. Set against Argentina´s turbulent years following the collapse of the corrupt Perónist regime, this is the heart warming story of Juan Salvador the penguin, rescued by Tom from an oil slick in Uruguay just days before a new term. When the bird refuses to leave Tom´s side, the young teacher has no choice but to smuggle it across the border, through customs, and back to school. Whether it´s as the rugby team´s mascot, the housekeeper´s confidant, the host at Tom´s parties or the most flamboyant swimming coach in world history, Juan Salvador transforms the lives of all he meets - in particular one homesick school boy. And as for Tom, he discovers in Juan Salvador a compadre like no other.... The Penguin Lessons is a unique and moving true story which has captured imaginations around the globe - for all those who dreamed as a child they might one day talk to the animals. 1. In September 1984, Lisa Paul, an American college student and nanny living in Moscow, entered Inna Meiman’s house for her first Russian language lesson. And so began a two–year friendship and a fight for Inna’s life. In Swimming in the Daylight, Lisa chronicles her friend’s struggle to shed her refusenik status, obtain a visa to America, and find medical treatment for her malignant cancer. Inna endured a perverse reality as a citizen of the Soviet Union: By refusing her permission to emigrate, her government denied her the ability to seek life-saving cancer treatment in Western countries. In effect, Inna explained to Lisa, this refusal was a form of Soviet persecution of her and her husband Naum, a member of the Moscow Helsinki Watch Group fighting for human rights in the U.S.S.R., for being Jewish. Spurred by outrage and the desire to help her friend, Lisa returned to the United States, vowing to do all she could to get Inna out of Moscow. She staged a hunger strike, held a press conference, and galvanized American politicians to fight for Inna’s freedom. All these efforts eventually persuaded Mikhail Gorbachev to issue Inna a visa in December 1986, when she finally stepped foot on American soil. At a time when international strife seemed insurmountable and worries at home seemed paralyzing, this story taught - and continues to teach - people everywhere that courage and willpower define a person and that individuals have the power to change the future. 1.
