Supporting Teachers: Improving Instruction
33,90 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

In the last decades, progress in the field of pre-service and in-service teacher education has been evident. Despite the developments of curriculum programs, models and designs, various challenges are shaping the field. Models of teacher education are usually presented as "research-based", but related research is often invisible or fragmented. The "support for teachers" and the "improvement of instruction" are only loosely coupled and their interdependence is not highlighted. These challenges were the impetus to initiate this publication. Individual approaches, models or designs of pre-service and in-service teacher education developed by the authors (action research, video clubs, lesson studies, and others) are introduced and their impact and shortcomings for further development are specified. In the concluding chapter, a reflective discussion across individual approaches to reveal particular issues that are shaping the field is provided. Practitioners as well as researchers in the field of teacher education can benefit from this book.

Developing Aesthetic Literacy in Visual Culture...

The main objective of this research was to provide theoretical insight into the teaching of visual culture studies in South Africa, with a specific focus on a visual analysis lesson. It proposes an approach to art teaching in the FET (Grades 10 -12) phase, that seeks to develop students' aesthetic literacy. This stems from the fact that only a limited number of higher education institutions in South Africa provide training for future FET art educators and, according to curriculum policy, educators should be providing students with skills that can be developed through aesthetic education approaches. This book offers a visual analysis planning framework and lesson plan for art educators that will guide them in shaping students' aesthetic literacy through the development of content knowledge, and the engagement of the imagination and feelings. The research design incorporated in this study was a meta-ethnography, which Noblit and Hare (1988) define as the synthesis of interpretive research through the comparison and analysis of texts, while creating new interpretations in the process.

Teaching the Harlem Renaissance: Course Design and Classroom Strategies addresses the practical and theoretical needs of college and high school instructors offering a unit or a full course on the Harlem Renaissance. In this collection many of the field's leading scholars address a wide range of issues and primary materials: the role of slave narrative in shaping individual and collective identity, the long-recognized centrality of women writers, editors, and critics within the "New Negro" movement, the role of the visual arts and "popular" forms in the dialogue about race and cultural expression, and tried-and-true methods for bringing students into contact with the movement's poetry, prose, and visual art. Teaching the Harlem Renaissance is meant to be an ongoing resource for scholars and teachers as they devise a syllabus, prepare a lecture or lesson plan, or simply learn more about a particular Harlem Renaissance writer or text.

How Ideas of European Integration Matter?
66,80 € *

In the wake of the financial crisis in East Asia in the second half of 1997/8, East Asia has taken serious consideration of the prospects for regional community building. South Korea and Japan, who had limited engagements in foreign/regional policy during the Cold War, developed different responses and approaches toward East Asian regionalism. Observing their efforts in building regional cooperation during the period between 1998 and 2007, it is notable that South Korea had been relatively active, whereas Japan had been passive in response to its neighbour s involvement in the East Asian regional framework, particularly in regard to China s role in shaping regional cooperation. Drawing on four mechanisms of diffusion (coercion, competition, lesson-drawing, emulation), this book provides not only explanations for the two countries differential approaches toward East Asian regionalism, but also advances a plausible account of how South Korea s EU-inspired vision of regional integration and its assimilation of European ideas about regional integration associate strongly with its active engagement in a newly emerged East Asian regionalism.
