College (Un)Bound: The Future of Higher Educati...

What is the value of a college degree?  The four-year college experience is as American as apple pie. So is the belief that higher education offers a ticket to a better life. But with student-loan debt surpassing the $1 trillion mark and unemployment of college graduates at historic highs, people are beginning to question that value.  In College (Un)Bound, Jeffrey J. Selingo, editor at large of the Chronicle of Higher Education, argues that America’s higher education system is broken. The great credentials race has turned universities into big businesses and fostered an environment where middle-tier colleges can command elite university-level tuitions while concealing staggeringly low graduation rates and churning out students with few of the skills needed for a rapidly evolving job market.  Selingo not only turns a critical eye on the current state of higher education but also predicts how technology will transform it for the better. Free massive online open courses (MOOCs) and hybrid classes, adaptive learning software, and the unbundling of traditional degree credits will increase access to high-quality education regardless of budget or location and tailor lesson plans to individual needs. One thing is certain: the class of 2020 will have a radically different college experience than their parents had.  Incisive, urgent, and controversial, College (Un)bound is a must-listen for prospective students, parents, and anyone concerned with the future of American higher education. 1. Many believe grades are all that matter for admission to graduate school or to land a good entry-level job right out of college. That thinking is dead wrong. Colleges are the first to say you need more than a degree. As a former hiring manager and current college professor, I can confirm that prospective employees with work experience are more attractive than those without. The current job market has created a demand for those with paid internships or structured cooperative learning (co-op) work experience while in school. Those with it rise to the top. That is why such experience is now an essential graduation requirement. Gaining a hands-on understanding of the industry you're interested in impresses a potential employer. Many students find their chosen industry so compelling that an internship or co-op cements their college major and career decision. Some, however, find the industry so boring that it leads them to change their plans. But it's better to learn that lesson during a one-semester internship, or six-month co-op, than after a year or more as a full-time employee.Whether it is a paid or volunteer status, a co-op or internship will increase your confidence and savvy while exhibiting dedication and responsibility. Finding the right placement can be tricky, and planning your effort is vital to getting it right from the start! The advice and guidance I give in this audiobook will improve your opportunities and help you create your personal career strategy to go from college campus to corner office in today's workplace. 1. The Wisdom of Near Death Experiences: How Under...

Dr. Penny Sartori is a registered nurse who began researching Near Death Experiences (NDEs) in 1995 after one of her long-term intensive care patients begged her to let him die in peace. The event shook her deeply and eventually led her to enroll in a PhD program to research NDEs. The findings, along with the profound spiritual lessons that she has gleaned from her work, are published here. During her academic work, Dr. Sartori studied three samples of ICU patients during a five year period. The first consisted of 243 patients from the first year of data collection who survived their ICU experience. Of those, two experienced an NDE, and two an out-of-body experience (OBE). The second cohort consisted of survivors of cardiac arrest during the five year period. Of those, 39 patients (or 18%) experienced an NDE. The third cohort consisted of all the patients who experienced an NDE during the five year period. Their stories are captured in her new book. One patient in particular, patient number 10, stands out for Dr. Sartori. When asked about the biggest takeaway from her research, Dr. Sartori says, "In medicine, we're trained to believe that the brain gives rise to consciousness. My research into NDEs has made me question this prevailing paradigm, which admittedly is very widespread. The most important lesson for me has been a deeper appreciation for death and a whole lot less fear and anxiety about it." In addition to detailing dozens of case studies, the book also discusses childhood NDEs, differences in NDEs among different cultures, and the after-effects of NDEs - one of which is the inability, in some patients, to wear a wrist-watch. Penny Sartori PhD, RGN is an expert in NDEs and undertook the UK's first long-term prospective study. She is the author of The Near-Death Experiences of Hospitalized Intensive Care Patients: A Five Year Clinical Study and lectures both nationally and internationally. 1. Language: English. TEACHING WRITING TO EFL PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS

English majors at the Faculty of Education need writing for many reasons. For one thing, as undergraduates they need to write term papers and articles in English. They are asked to answer essay questions in different subjects such as novel, drama, poetry, etc. For another, they need to take notes in English at lectures, talks and when reading. Finally, as prospective teachers they need to write lesson plans, summaries, reports, short pieces of narrative , simplification of a passage to suit learners of a certain level, etc. Hence, the aim of this book is developing the writing skills of the students integratively and interactively. By using this approach writing is not taught separately without an integration with the other language skills (listening, speaking, and reading), writing is taught in a productive way, writing is taught communicatively, and most of the aspects of writing are attended to.

This book introduces the specifics of mathematics lesson study with regard to regional/national particularities, discussing the methodological and theoretical tools that can be used to pursue research on lesson study (its forms, contents, effects etc.) from an international perspective. Lesson study and learning study (LS) are becoming increasingly important in teacher education, mostly in continuous professional development, but also in prospective teachers' education, and this interest is accompanied by a demand for more solid theorization of the lesson study process. A number of social, cultural, cognitive and affective issues are reflected in the way LS develops, and the book examines the latest results of these developments.

Theory and Practice of Lesson Study in Mathematics

This book brings together and builds on the current research efforts on adaptation, conceptualization, and theorization of Lesson Study (LS). It synthesizes and illustrates major perspectives for theorizing LS and enriches the conceptualization of LS by interpreting the activity as it is used in Japan and China from historical and cultural perspectives. Presenting the practices and theories of LS with practicing teachers and prospective teachers in more than 10 countries, it enables the reader to take a comparative perspective. Finally, the book presents and discusses studies on key aspects of LS such as lesson planning, post-lesson discussion, guiding theories, connection between research and practice, and upscaling.Lesson Study, which has originated in Asia as a powerful effective professional development model, has spread globally. Although the positive effects of lesson study on teacher learning, student learning, and curriculum reforms have been widely documented, conceptualization of and research on LS have just begun to emerge. This book, including 38 chapters contributed by 90 scholars from 21 countries, presents a truly international collaboration on research on and adaptation of LS, and significantly advances the development of knowledge about this process.Chapter 15: " How Variance and Invariance Can Inform Teachers' Enactment of Mathematics Lessons" of this book is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.comTheory and Practice of Lesson Study in Mathematics: An International Perspective shows that the power of Lesson Study to transform the role of teachers in classroom research cannot be explained by a simple replication model. Here we see Lesson Study being successful internationally when its key principles and practices are taken seriously and are adapted to meet local issues and challenges. (Max Stephens, Senior research fellow at The University of Melbourne)It works. Instruction improves, learning improves. Wide scale? Enduring? Deep impact? Lesson study has it. When something works as well as lesson study does, while alternative systems for improving instruction fail, or only succeed on small scale or evaporate as quickly as they show promise, it is time to understand how and why lesson study works. This volume brings the research on lesson study together from around the world. Here is what we already know and here is the way forward for research and practice informed by research. It is time to wake up and pay attention to what has worked so well, on wide scale for so long.(Phil Dara, A leading author of the Common Core State Standards of Mathematics in the U.S.)
