IF HE WRITES YOUR NAME DOWN, IT'S A DEATH SENTENCE . . . Los Angeles, December 4th - exactly three weeks until Christmas day. Angela Wood, a master in the art of pickpocket, has just finished for the day - six hundred and eighty-seven dollars - not bad for less than fifteen minutes work. As she celebrates her profitable day with a cocktail, one of the patrons in the lounge she's in catches her attention by being rude to an old man. Angela decides to teach him a lesson, and steals the man's expensive-looking leather bag. Inside is no money ... no laptop computer ... nothing of any value ... at least not to Angela. Just a black, leather-bound book, surprisingly heavy. Curiosity takes over and in the comfort of her apartment, Angela quickly leafs through the pages. That is when the worst nightmare of her life begins. This is no ordinary book. Read it at your own peril. The compulsive new thriller from the author of the Sunday Times Number One bestseller Hunting Evil. What the reviewers are saying about Chris Carter: 'Carter has a background in criminal psychology and the killers at the centre of his novels are all the more terrifying for it' Mail on Sunday, chosen for 'If You Only Pack One' 'Carter is one of those authors who makes writing look effortless ... I couldn't put it down' Crime Squad 'An insanely good crime series. Extraordinarily well written, high quality and high drama all the way' Liz Loves Books 'An intriguing and scary thriller' Better Reading 'A gripping feast of thrills' Shots 'A gripping psychological thriller' Breakaway 'This is a chilling, compulsive portrait of a psychopath, and proves that Carter is now in the Jeffery Deaver class' Daily Mail 'Punchy and fast paced' Sunday Mirror 'There's a touch of the Patricia Cornwell about Chris Carter's plotting' Mail on Sunda

Power of the Dog: 10 Short Stories from the Dog...
9,95 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

This book is a collection of 10 short stories from my book Dog Tales - 60 True Doggy Stories of Loyalty, Heroism and Devotion. As a naturalist, a wildlife photographer, and a dog owner all my life, it never ceases to amaze me the incredible connection we have with our canine companions. With dogs, you get back what you put in, just as you do with your human relationships. Dogs, however, show more ability to forgive the cruelty and indiscretion of ignorant people - well, at least that's what I have observed. As the old saying goes, "No such thing as a bad dog, just a bad owner," and this I believe with all my heart. All my dogs have been rescue dogs taken from lives of abandonment and often cruelty. With patience, love, and stability, all of my dogs have shown loyalty and love way beyond any human should deserve. They've taught me so much, and my life without them would be so much poorer. The stories in this series of books will hopefully make you laugh, cry, and be proud to be a dog owner. Please remember this budget-priced book is just a small sample of the complete volume Dog Tales, which is also available in audio and paperback. If you enjoy my stories, I'd really appreciate it if you could leave an honest review. Thanks, J. Hodges, aka The Dogman Stories include: "Dandy's Day" "A Life-Saving Nose" "Waiting" "The Dog Who Stole the Show" "Service with a Smile" "Guardian Angel" "Lesson Learned" "Someone Else's Sandy" "Fast Flash" "Pulled from the Wreckage" 1. 'The second edition highlights Ganske's ‘next-generation’ word study, which strategically integrates academic vocabulary instruction with word study. Ganske provides classroom teachers and specialists with authentic tools and resources for developing students’ knowledge using cognitive engagement, academic conversations, and explicit instruction. Lesson scenarios with accompanying classroom snapshots weave theory into practice, covering the ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘how’ of effective teaching. Our district is just beginning a deep study of academic language, and I know this book will capably guide us.'--Bev Taylor, MSE, K–5 reading specialist, Wasco Elementary School, St. Charles, Illinois 'This book continues to be an indispensable professional resource for every elementary teacher and English language instructor. Whether you are a novice or seasoned educator, Ganske provides comprehensive instruction for helping students to discern orthography and vocabulary in greater depth. The SAIL framework, coupled with classroom transcripts, shows how teachers can foster discussion that leads to increased understanding of academic vocabulary and everyday words. The perspectives of several teachers sharing their keen insights and reflections are valuable, as are the book's assessments, suggested games, and sample lessons.'--Connie Largent, MS, Principal, Stonegate Elementary School, Zionsville, Indiana 'Ganske’s second edition is rich with useful materials to help teachers meet the individual word study needs of their students. Teacher perspectives and examples of teacher–student conversations offer excellent models of high-quality instruction. Time-saving word and picture cards are just right for sorting while engaging students in deep learning about words. The new chapter on English learners and the supplemental online resources are welcome additions, presenting readers with both theoretical and practical insights into helping children learn to read, write, and spell in English.”--Patricia L. Scharer, PhD, Department of Teaching and Learning, The Ohio State University

Murder Runs in the Family: A Southern Sisters M...

Mary Alice has spared nothing for her only daughter´s wedding -- from seventy-five yards of bridal train to gourmet food for over three hundred guests and enough glittering elegance to make Mary Alice think about finding herself a fourth rich husband to pay for it all. Practical Patricia Anne has put away her aunt-of-the-bride blue chiffon and settled back into domesticity when fun-loving Mary Alice calls to say they have a post-wedding date with a genealogist from the groom´s side of the family. Lunch is a fascinating lesson on the hazards of finding dirty linens in ancestral boudoirs that ends abruptly when their guest scurries off with the local judge, leaving the sisters with their mouths open -- and finishing their luncheon companion´s cheesecake -- when the police arrive. Their mysterious guest has taken a plunge from the ninth floor of the courthouse building -- an apparent suicide. But given the scandals a nosy genealogist might have uncovered, the sisters are betting that some proud Southern family is making sure their shameful secrets stay buried. . .along with anyone who tries to dig them up.

Maudlin Impression

Patricia Badir's The Maudlin Impression investigates the figure of Mary Magdalene in post-medieval English religious writings and visual representations. Badir argues that the medieval Magdalene story was not discarded as part of Reformation iconoclasm, but was enthusiastically embraced by English writers and artists and retold in a wide array of genres. This rich study bridges the historical division between medieval and early modern culture by showing the ways in which Protestant writers, as well as Catholics, used the medieval stories, art, and symbolism related to the biblical Magdalene as resources for thinking about the role of the affective and erotic in Christian devotion. Their literary and artistic glosses protected a range of religious devotional practices and lent embodied, tangible form to the God of the Reformation. They employed the Magdalene figure to articulate religious experience by means of a poetics that could avoid controversial questions of religious art while exploring the potency and appeal of the beautiful. The Maudlin Impression is a literary history of imitation and invention. It participates in the 'religious turn' in early modern studies by demonstrating the resilience of a single topos across time and across changing Christian beliefs. 'In this historically rich and theoretically informed study, Patricia Badir argues that the medieval figure of Mary Magdalene serves as a 'site of memory' for early modern writers, enabling them both to reflect on what has been lost in the aftermath of the Reformation and to fashion their own Protestant and Counter-Reformation models of piety, repentance, mourning, and holiness. Drawing from poems, plays, sermons, homilies, biographies, and paintings, Badir convincingly demonstrates the remarkable resiliency and flexibility of the Magdalene trope in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Her fascinating narrative traces the evolution of the Magdalene from the Reformation to the Restoration and raises provocative questions about the mnemonic function of religious art, the power of beautiful images in an iconoclastic culture, and the place of affect, longing, and embodiment in a Protestant poetics.' --Huston Diehl, University of Iowa 'In the aftermath of the Reformation, the English wrote about Mary Magdalene. Sometimes she belongs to a specifically Protestant poetics: the gaudy Catholic whore turned Reformed penitent. Yet most post-Reformation Magdalenes resist Catholic-or-Protestant pigeonholing; instead, all unexpectedly, Badir's quick-eyed scholarship discloses continuities, convergences, recuperations. . . . [Her] book luminously teaches the all-important lesson that the Reformation fought in polemics was not necessarily the Reformation found in poetry.' --Debora Shuger, University of California, Los Angeles 'A marvelously textured account from an early modern perspective of an alluring sacred figure about whom there has recently been a Renaissance of cultural interest--popular as well as scholarly. Badir subtly explicates how the theological and artistic issues concerning the devotional depiction of the Magdalene go to the core of Christian representational practice, provoking, all along the way, questions about gender, desire, and sacred eroticism.' --Richard Rambuss, Emory University
