Successful Transposition of Lesson Study

This book analyses the organisation cultures that promote Japanese Lesson Study, identifies the soul of lesson study, which is missing in other cultures, and discusses the conditions for successfully transplanting the Lesson Study to other cultures. Adopting Nonaka and Tateuchi's (1995) SECI knowledge creation model as the analytical lens, it explores the tacit and explicit knowledge convention and creation processes in lesson study. Unpacking the mechanism of the knowledge management process and practices could assist policy makers and school administrators, educators in contextualising lesson study to their school systems. The book provides an accessible discussion of the benefits and challenges of introducing lesson study, and presents three new research dimensions to analyse it: reviewing the historical development of lesson study in terms of the pendulum swings between professional accountability and state accountability in developing the school-based curriculum and the national curriculum, examining lesson study as a knowledge management tool for creating pedagogical knowledge for curriculum implementation: and studying the "kaizen kata" embedded in the PDCA cycles of lesson study as an organization routine for school improvement.

This book brings together and builds on the current research efforts on adaptation, conceptualization, and theorization of Lesson Study (LS). It synthesizes and illustrates major perspectives for theorizing LS and enriches the conceptualization of LS by interpreting the activity as it is used in Japan and China from historical and cultural perspectives. Presenting the practices and theories of LS with practicing teachers and prospective teachers in more than 10 countries, it enables the reader to take a comparative perspective. Finally, the book presents and discusses studies on key aspects of LS such as lesson planning, post-lesson discussion, guiding theories, connection between research and practice, and upscaling.Lesson Study, which has originated in Asia as a powerful effective professional development model, has spread globally. Although the positive effects of lesson study on teacher learning, student learning, and curriculum reforms have been widely documented, conceptualization of and research on LS have just begun to emerge. This book, including 38 chapters contributed by 90 scholars from 21 countries, presents a truly international collaboration on research on and adaptation of LS, and significantly advances the development of knowledge about this process.Chapter 15: " How Variance and Invariance Can Inform Teachers' Enactment of Mathematics Lessons" of this book is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.comTheory and Practice of Lesson Study in Mathematics: An International Perspective shows that the power of Lesson Study to transform the role of teachers in classroom research cannot be explained by a simple replication model. Here we see Lesson Study being successful internationally when its key principles and practices are taken seriously and are adapted to meet local issues and challenges. (Max Stephens, Senior research fellow at The University of Melbourne)It works. Instruction improves, learning improves. Wide scale? Enduring? Deep impact? Lesson study has it. When something works as well as lesson study does, while alternative systems for improving instruction fail, or only succeed on small scale or evaporate as quickly as they show promise, it is time to understand how and why lesson study works. This volume brings the research on lesson study together from around the world. Here is what we already know and here is the way forward for research and practice informed by research. It is time to wake up and pay attention to what has worked so well, on wide scale for so long.(Phil Dara, A leading author of the Common Core State Standards of Mathematics in the U.S.)

STEM Through a Wind Turbine Curriculum in Your Classroom uses a storyline. This curriculum is based on one main question. How are Communities Impacted by Renewable Energy Produced by Wind Turbines? Each of the 12 lessons in this curriculum, in turn, is based on a grade-level appropriate question:STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) are interwoven in each lesson. While integration of STEM concepts can be challenging, using a wind turbine makes the integration natural. There is a progression from awareness of concepts in elementary grades to qualitative understanding in middle school to quantitative understanding and evidence-building in high school. Each lesson uses the 5E Teaching Model (a research-based best practice). Engagement: Stories or Videos used to create interest, Exploration: Student activity, Explanation: Students explain concepts, Extension: Options for deeper learning, Evaluation: Assessment options. Teacher Edition (background information and objectives) and Student Edition (which can be used as a handout) provided for each lesson.

The book is about classroom assessment strategies. Especially, investigating the way that the teachers deliver the questions to the students. The book focuses on the two main types of assessment. Formative assessment which requires to provide feedback to the students. Formative assessment is practiced every lesson in every day. The second type of assessment is that summative assessment which usually happens at the end of the lesson or unit or semester. Additionally, the book differentiates between these two types and continuous assessment. It gave a model to unpack the overlap between formative assessment and continuous assessment. The main factor of identifying this distinguishes is diagnostic characteristic.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A cognitive tutor is an intelligent tutoring system which develops a cognitive model of a student as he or she interacts with the program, providing problems and individualized instruction based on this model. Cognitive Tutor is also the name of a product produced by Carnegie Learning. In each lesson, it tends to tell of a real world scenario. Then, it asks the student to solve a section math problems related to the scenario. The next section makes the student think of how they solved the problem and teaches them the concepts used to solve. Another scenario and questions with similar concepts are given. An example might be lesson of scientific notation for Algebra I. Students are told about how Sci. Notation is used to describe distance between planets and asked to simplify distances between planets. Then they are told how to simply move the decimal rather than simplify through multiplication, and are asked to apply this skill.
