Cinematic Metaphor

Metaphors in audiovisual media receive increasing attention from film and communication studies as well as from linguistics and multimodal metaphor research. The specific media character of film, and thus of cinematic metaphor, remains, however, largely ignored. Audiovisual images are all too frequently understood as iconic representations and material carriers of information. Cinematic Metaphor proposes an alternative: starting from film images as affective experience of movement-images, it replaces the cognitive idea of viewers as information-processing machines, and heals the break with rhetoric established by conceptual metaphor theory. Subscribing to a phenomenological concept of embodiment, a shared vantage point for metaphorical meaning-making in film-viewing and face-to-face interaction is developed. The book offers a critique of cognitive film and metaphor theories and a theory of cinematic metaphor as performative action of meaning-making, grounded in the dynamics of viewers' embodied experiences with a film. Fine-grained case studies ranging from Hollywood to German feature film and TV news, from tango lesson to electoral campaign commercial, illustrate the framework's application to media and multimodality analysis.

Richard Sibbes is widely considered to have been one of the fathers of Puritanism in the 17th century. His passionate sermons and devotional works have persisted throughout the centuries and continue to influence modern-day scholars and people all over the world. Taking a phrase from Matthew 12:20, Sibbes explains what it means to be a "bruised reed". It is a metaphor that exemplifies the way in which God humbles sinners by allowing them to see sin in the way that he sees it - the lesson being that God sometimes wounds before healing but with the ultimate goal of deepening our love for Christ. Sibbes believed very strongly that "God's love rests on Christ" and often spoke of the comfort to be gained by acknowledging this. He preached that the same can be had for those who live in Christ and seek redemption for their sins. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jim Denison. When you bring a new dog into your home, a wash of great joy can become a trial of perseverance as your furry pal chews, digs, yaps, and yes, piddles her way through every room in the house. Allison Pittman learned this all too well when she adopted a "tiny, shiny puppy of indefinable breed(s)". Stella wasted no time in turning her home upside-down as only a pup can.As could be expected, six weeks of obedience school covered the much needed basics–sit, stay, come, and down. What Allison didn’t expect was the spiritual benefit she would receive as each Saturday lesson revealed a fascinating metaphor. In this heart-warming, thoughtful, and often hilarious tribute to her beloved Stella, Allison Pittman shares how she came to understand what it means to follow the ultimate Master, including how to: Sit!–at the feet of Jesus and listen for His voice; Drop It! - and let go of personal agendas; Come!–when it’s time to run in the right direction; and Stay! - in God’s presence. In Saturdays with Stella, a slightly neurotic yet curiously adorable canine will not only capture your heart - she’ll show you how captivating you are to God. 1. Language: English. Twenty years ago, while riding in the back of a New York City taxicab, syndicated columnist and business consultant David J. Pollay had an awakening - and he converted the lesson he learned that day into a life philosophy: By letting other people's garbage - their negativity - simply pass by, and not dumping garbage on others, you can become happier and more successful, both personally and professionally. Since David published the Law in his newspaper column three years ago, more than 1,000 blogs have posted it, millions more have read it, and organizations worldwide have adopted it. And the numbers keep growing. Translated into nearly 50 languages, people from more than 100 countries have taken David's No Garbage Trucks! Pledge. All over the world people remember the focusing metaphor of the garbage truck for what can be achieved in life by not staking success and happiness on the behavior of others. Powerful and easily understood, The Law of the Garbage Truck will guide and inspire listeners everywhere, every day. Now Pollay shows you how to apply his Law in this remarkable audiobook that can help you: Avoid getting dumped on by rude, thoughtless, and angry people Stop reliving the negative in your past, and fearing the future Focus on what you can control, not the negative things you can’t Reduce incivility wherever you find it, and stop bullies in their tracks Improve your relationships by not dumping on your friends, parents, spouse, or coworkers Find happiness again after dealing with illness, loss, and personal tragedy Increase productivity, respect, and cooperation by creating a No Garbage Trucks! Zone in your business, school, and home Gain the courage to enjoy every day, do what you love, and make a difference 1. Language: English. Narrator: David J Pollay. Literary devices refer to specific aspects of literature. Broadly, speaking literature expresses ideas through language, which the readers recognize, identify, interpret and analyze. Literary writers use different devices in order to convey their meanings in a comprehensive manner. Allegory is an important device, which has been used by the writers from centuries, It is an extended metaphor, it is a story in which fictional characters, incidents and actions are presented before the readers, then it is up to the readers to think over it, understand its different aspects of conceptual relation to human beings and ideas of the story which the writer has intended to impart. Allegory is a form writing in which characters, plots, setting are symbolic and they are used to teach a moral lesson to the readers. As Renaissance authors used to say, "Allegory is the captain of all rhetorical figures of Speech and we might say it is a ship of tools or a Dreadnought".
