Starting Teaching Pronunciation to Czech Learne...

"... this can t be me speaking, I sound so well in English now!" "Having known this, I had scored better in my listening tests, do you think there is a connection between pronunciation and listening?"..."Why did we learn this in French in the third lesson and never in English... These and the alike are comments of my middle-aged adult students after having gone through a lesson on connected speech, which unfortunately is not a very popular topic in the Czech Rep. The reasons may vary, from lack of time to teach and focus on pronunciation, or due to the fact that Czech is a phonetic language as opposed to English being a stressed-time language, lack of experience in pronunciation learning, non-native teachers' fear of pronunciation lessons and other. The work also shows research with a group of young adult learners, their will, attitude, progress, enthusiasm, boredom, motivation at different stages of the year-long project of introducing and practising the rules of connected speech. The book is bringing examples and shortcuts for both teachers and learners of English.

Investing in the Age of Democracy

This book offers a structured, deductive approach to Austrian investing, beginning with an analysis of the current investing paradigm. There are five economic concepts on which the Austrian School of Economics has a unique view: Entrepreneurship, Class Probability, Capital, the Interest Rate, and Institutions. This book explains, lesson by lesson, how each of theseshapes our thinking about investing. If we follow them through their logical consequences, they leave us with a unique approach to investing. Except for the theory of probability, there has not been a comprehensive analysis of the linkages between these concepts, when it comes to investing. Although they would have been obvious to the average investor before the age of democracy, since the French and American revolutions, government interventions have steadily transformed the way we think about them (and the way we invest). Above all, Entrepreneurship and Institutions are downplayed today, while investors use Case Probability, and confuse the concepts of Money and Capital. This book offers a historical review of these interventions, to shed light on how we went from what was common sense to the status quo. Offering a sometimes technical analysis, the book examines a series of fundamental investment fallacies, their origins and how not to fall for them.

Greece and the Reinvention of Politics

One of the world's leading radical philosophers analyses the failure of the Syriza experience in GreeceIn a series of seven trenchant interventions Alain Badiou analyses the decisive developments in Greece since 2011. Badiou considers this Mediterranean country "a sort of open-air political lesson", with much to tell us about the wider situation. Greece is exemplary of "our fundamental contradictions in Europe, which are also ultimately the fundamental contradictions of the world such as it is-the world served up to the authoritarian anarchy of capitalism."Notwithstanding the Greeks' heartening opposition to the financial markets' hegemony, Badiou considers it also important to address the reasons why this opposition failed. "Movementist" politics may arouse widespread sympathy, but for the French philosopher they have "absolutely no effect other than to temporarily trap the movement in the negative weakness of its affects."Badiou argues that a consequential opposition inspired by the emancipatory politics of the past-or by what he calls "the communist hypothesis"-should set its compass by the "orienting maxims" proposed in this book, defining a direction for political action.
