Mutiny. Disease. Starvation. Cannibals. From the ancient wayfarers to modern astronauts, world explorers have blazed trails fraught with danger. Yet, as History's Greatest Voyages of Exploration vividly demonstrates, exploration continues to be one of humanity's deepest impulses. Across 24 lectures that unveil the process by which we came to know the far reaches of our planet, you'll witness the awe-inspiring and surprisingly interconnected tale of global exploration. An award-winning history professor from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, revolutionizes how you view the world as he introduces you to some of the greatest and most influential explorers ever known-successful as well as unsuccessful, admirable as well as flawed. You'll be spellbound as you learn of the treacherous, at times fatal, expeditions into the unknown these adventurers embarked upon, whether to the frozen Poles, Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, the ocean's depths, or the final frontier of space. Through it all, you consider what drove these intrepid individuals, from proselytizing and pilgrimage to the lure of wealth, conquest, fame, and new lands, as evidenced by the Vikings' arrival in North America; Marco Polo's journey along the Silk Road to China; Christopher Columbus' "Enterprise of the Indies"; the conquistadors' ravages in Latin America; and the tiny kingdom of Portugal's triumphant circumnavigation of Africa to seize control of trade in the Indian Ocean. In every lesson, you'll follow these fascinating figures - including several remarkable women - as they venture into uncharted territory and put themselves, and often their crews, in dire peril. With Professor Liulevicius' uniquely global approach, you also get a meaningful portrait of the travels of non-Westerners, as well as the perspectives of discovered people. Jack's a retired ex-cop from New York, seeking the simple life in Cherringham. Sarah's a Web designer who's moved back to the village find herself. But their lives are anything but quiet as the two team up to solve Cherringham's criminal mysteries. This compilation contains episodes 13 - 15: A Lesson in Murder: When Jack and Sarah are called in to investigate mysterious pranks at Cherringham Girls School, it seems at first that it might be the work of a few mean pupils with a grudge. But things quickly turn serious when a popular teacher meets a sudden, violent death. The Secret of Combe Castle: When the penniless FitzHenrys find themselves victims of a threatening campaign to oust them from their ancestral home, Jack and Sarah are called in to track down the culprit. Soon they discover that truth is often stranger than fiction, and in Combe Castle things do indeed go bump in the night... A Fatal Fall: Dylan McCabe - a labourer on a rushed Cherringham building project - has been complaining about the site's lack of safety. When he's discovered dead after a fall, it seems that Dylan's own warnings were all too true. Jack and Sarah get involved, and suddenly what looks like an accident, becomes a case of cold-blooded murder. Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick listen for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa. For fans of Agatha Christie's "Miss Marple series", Lilian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who series", Caroline Graham's "Midsomer Murders", and the American TV series "Murder She Wrote", starring Angela Lansbury. Too Many Notes, Mr Mozart (Mozart Mysteries 3) ...

The Mr Mozart of Bernard Bastable's Dead, Mr Mozart was a German child prodigy who stayed on in England after his visit of 1764, cursing the luck that made him a despised hack in a foreign country, instead of being cherished and honoured in his native Austria. Then he found himself involved, willy-nilly, in the sordid business of George IV's divorce from Queen Caroline. Now, in 1830, with Wolfgang Gottlieb (he prefers the German form of his name) Mozart still remarkably spry for his age, it seems things are looking up: he is asked to give piano lessons to the young Princess Victoria. He is less sure of his good fortune, however, when the princess, during her first lesson, makes a most unusual demand of him. And things go from bad to dangerous when she becomes Heir Apparent to the throne, and seems destined to be the victim of a tug-of-love between the new King, William IV, and her unwise mother, the Duchess of Kent. When the King's brood of illegitimate children, the FitzClarences, join in the situation rapidly gets alarming overtones, and when one of the guests at a Windsor Castle reception finds that drinking out of other people's glasses can have fatal consequences, Mr Mozart has to face up to the fact that someone may have designs on his rather delightful new pupil.

Secret of the Heiau

Of places like Stonehenge, the Pyramids, Inca and Mayan Temples, Nazca lines, it's the Hawaiian Heiau, which yields the most knowledge from their study. The Archaeoastronomy found on O'Ahu is spectacular. 'To describe the beauty in the symmetry of O'Ahu's Heiau Template and how the site experts, the Kahuna Kuhi Kuhi Puuone, who designed the system is like trying to describe the Big Chip in the celestial heavens. The one God used in His computer to design the Earth.' The Secret of the Heiau' is a wealth of Native Beliefs It is so awesome, how Hawaiians had the mathematical and technical ability to build the O'Ahu Template of Places of Worship known as Heiau. They were first class surveyors with the highest degree of competence. Students of Hawaii Studies are the ones to complete the big picture of archaeoastronomy in Hawaii. This book is intended for the upper high school and college students and really anyone interested in Hawaiiana. This is a novel Archaeoas'rono'my in Hawaii primer. To be hip about Hawaii, this book needs to be read and understood. Early Polynesian Wayfarers used navigational stars to guide them across the Pacific. Travel from Tahiti and Bora Bora used specific navigational stars to sail to Hawaii. Once landed in Hawaii, navigational stars not needed for navigation any more, were turned into calendar stars. Monuments were built to honor their rising and setting places. This knowledge is etched in stone in that Heiau were built on straight ley lines to one another and significant landforms so this knowledge would never be lost. The main character Rono, is favored by Hawaiians Spirits and the Aumakuas because of a connection to Lono Makua, the Hawaiian God for rain, fertility, agriculture and peace. These Spiritual entities protect and take revenge if necessary for Rono. Unfortunately there are fatalities when Hawaiian Spirits are summoned by Rono to inflict pain upon a University of Hawaii grad student and fatalities resulting in the bad part of the Secret of the Heiau is also of Rono's doing. Rono is teaching his grandson, Lono, everything he knows about Heiau and the rituals performed there while explaining the complexities and idiosyncrasies of being a timekeeper kahuna stuck in the days and ways of the People of Old but living in the modern world. Rono knows Hawaiian Spirits have taken an interest in Lono and when Lono gets angry at his brother, his brother is critically injured, and made handicap for life. More evidence of spiritual protection is when a security guards mishandled Lono and has a fatal accident. After this Lono knows how important it is to control his anger. And Lono is full of questions. Whenever Lono asks his grandfather specific questions about space and astronomy, Rono always brakes down. Lono knows even though the Secret of the Heiau is to make Hawaiians realize how smart are the people they come from and how smart they must really be, he knows there is a very bad part to it. A romance develops with a beautiful Japanese lady, thirty years Rono's junior. She is infatuated with Rono's knowledge of the hidden Hawaii. It seems this lady is the answer to Rono's Vision Quest he had when he was a young man in the State of Maine. Over time this evolves into a lover's dream but the bad part could very well drive Rono's lover away This bad part has lots of bad karma associated with it and takes Rono's absolute peace and true happiness away from him. There are many life's lesson and unique native perspective in the Secret of the Heiau.
